This bibliography of Sanda Cisneros identifies first editions and selected other editions of her books. Corrections and suggestions are always welcome. |

1. Bad Boys Sandra Cisneros' very scarce first book, a short collection of poems. Most copies have brown paper for the text. A relatively small number have the text photocopied onto white paper and stapled into left over covers.

2a. The House on Mango Street. Houston: Arte Publico Press, (1984). 103 pages. First editions have no indication of later printings on the copyright page. The book was revised a number of times following publication and there are some differences among the various printings and editions published by Arte Publico. The first printing was only 500 copies and the book is very scarce now. Shevaun Donelli has compared the text of
three different editions of The House on Mango Street and has
identified 54 changes from the first edition. A
complete list is available (pdf format). |

2b. The House on Mango Street. (London): Bloomsbury, (1992). 110 pages. First British edition, a paperback original. First editions have a number line ending in 1 on the copyright page.

2c. The House on Mango Street. First hardcover edition. Alfred A. Knopf, 1994. 134 pages. First editions are identified by the statement "First Hardcover Edition, May 1994" with no indications of later printings. This edition, published to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the first printing, went through several printings.

| 2d. La casa en Mango Street.
New York: Vintage Books, (1994). 112 pages. Translated by Elena
Poniatowska. With "Agradecimientos" by the author. The first US
Spanish language edition. First editions have a number line on the
copyright page ending in 1.
This is a relatively early book in the Vintage Español series and the initial print runs were reported to be relatively small—5,000 or so copies. I have not seen figures for this book but it is relatively uncommon in the first edition. As an indication of the influence of this book, the translator is one of the best-known contemporary Mexican literary writers. |
| 3a. My Wicked Wicked Ways. Bloomington, IL: Third Woman Press, 1987. 93 pages. First editions have no indication of later printings on the copyright page and have the Bloomington imprint on the title page. |
| 3b. My Wicked Wicked Ways. New York: Turtle Bay Books, 1992. First hardcover edition. 103 pages. First printings have "First Hardcover Edition" and "98765432" on the copyright page. A promotional post card was laid into most copies. For the fourth printing, the publisher changed to Knopf. That edition is identified by "First Knopf Printing, June 1994" on the copyright page. |
| 4a. My Wicked Wicked Ways. Berkeley: Okeanos Press, (n.d. but ca. 1992). The first separate printing of this poem, a letterpress broadside. | ||
| 5a. Woman Hollering Creek and Other
Stories. New York: Random House, (1991). 165 pages. First editions
have a number line, "98765432" and "First Edition" on
the copyright page. This is a fine collection of short stories and Cisneros's most recent (!) volume of prose. Her next novel, Caramelo, has been in the works for several years. Reportedly it is finally nearing completion. |

5b. Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories. (London): Bloomsbury, (1993). 165 pages. First British edition, a paperback original. First editions have a number line ending in 1 on the copyright page. |
| 5c. El arroyo de la Llorona y otros cuentos. New York: Vintage Books, (1996). First US Spanish translation. Translated by Liliana Valenzuela, who contributes an afterword. First editions have a number line ending in 1 on the copyright page. Paperback. |
| 5d. Los ojos de Zapata. (San Antonio): (Instituto de México), (2003). A separate publication of a short story, "The Eyes of Zapata," from Woman Hollering Creek with Liliana Valenzuela's translation. Bound dos-a-dos with Cristina Pacheco's Limpios de todo Amor. Hardcover in dust jacket. States "Primera edición: febrero de 2003." Introduction by Enrique Cortázar, |
| 6a. Hairs / Pelitos.
New York: Alfred A. Knopf (An Apple Soup Book), (1994). Unpaginated but
26 pages. First trade edition, an illustrated children's book in English
and Spanish, using a chapter from House on Mango Street.
Illustrated by Terry Ybáñez. First editions have a number line ending in
1 on the last printed page.
Also published in a library binding, which I have not seen. |
| 7a. Loose Woman.
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1994. 115 pages. First editions have the
words "First Edition" as the last line on the copyright page
(no additional printings listed). This is Cisneros's most recent book of
poems, and a much better collection, in my opinion, than My
Wicked Wicked Ways.
Hairs, Loose Woman and the hardcover of Mango Street appear to have been published on the same day, May 5, 1994. |
| 8a.Caramelo;
Or, puro cuento. New York: Knopf, 2002. 443 pages. First
editions state "First Edition" on the copyright page with no
additional printings listed. The book was selected for the Today Show's
book club. Hardcover; later printing jackets display that logo.
Note: This book had at least three proof editions with slightly different texts (song lyrics that were deleted) than the published edition. The bindings are plain yellow printed wrappers, a sales-conference edition, and a regular advance reading copy (with a different design than the final dust jacket). Note: Also issued in a large print edition by Thorndike. |
| 8b.Caramelo;
O, puro cuento. A Spanish-language translation by Liliana
Valenzuela issued simultaneous with the English edition. New York:
Knopf, 2002. 467 pages plus credits and notes. With a five-page
afterword by the translator.. First editions state "Primera
edición" on the copyright page with no additional printings
listed. Hardcover in jacket.
Note: Also issued in a large print edition by Thorndike. |
