P. Scott Brown, Bookseller

Summary of Qualifications

Since 1995, I have provided libraries with hard-to-find and out-of-print materials related to the Latino experience in the United States, through more than two dozen printed catalogs. I have written biographical entries on Latino authors for the Encyclopedia Latina and other reference works and have made contributions to bibliography and textual studies of several authors, including Gary Soto and Sandra Cisneros.

My customers include most major libraries on both coasts and the important collections in the center of the country. I have also worked with institutions in Japan, the U.K., and Germany.

In recent years, I have sold or appraised significant manuscript material by Sandra Cisneros, Gary Soto, Jose Antonio Burciaga, Piri Thomas, Luis Omar Salinas, Ricardo Sanchez, and others.

Among my specialties are the:

  • Literary archives of Latino authors
  • United Farm Workers union and Cesar Chavez
  • Spanish-language press in the US (pre-Second World War)
  • Hispanic New Mexico
  • Posters and other graphic arts

Services
I enjoy working with libraries to expand their collections of key works in the Latino canon and am happy to suggest suitable acquisitions based on current holdings and established policies. I have connections to most private collectors in the field, as well as many authors and publishers. If it's available, I can probably find it.

I conduct appraisals for estates, authors, and institutions. I am also happy to provide guidance to individuals considering the sale of their collections.

Other Qualifications
I am the founder and editor of Fine Books & Collections, the largest circulation magazine for book collectors and winner of the 2005 Eddie Award for best enthusiast magazine.
