Notes: First edition, first issue. 280 pages. A novel of two slaves who escape bondage for Canada. Howard was one of the few African American writers born before the Civil War to publish a novel. While relatively little is known about him, other than that he published Howard's Negro American Magazine from 1889 to 1901 and he was probably born free, in Pennsylvania, in 1856.
Edition + Condition: A lovely copy of the first issue, with a frontispiece portrait of the author (omitted or removed from the second issue). There is light scuffing to the pebbled cloth and a bookplate on the front pastedown, else fine. [JSP01]
Publication: Harrisburg: Edwin K. Meyers, 1886.
