Niggli (1910–1983) was born to Anglo parents in Mexico, and for much of her childhood she went back and forth between Mexico and San Antonio. Her close connection to the land of her birth inspired most of her writing. The novel was adapted into film as Sombrero, starring Ricardo Montalban.
