Un jardín que escribía cartas de amor [A Garden That Wrote Love Letters]

Notes: 147 pages. 8-1/4 by 10-1/4 inches. An edition of 200 copies. Colección del Estero

A selection of poems from four of the Holguín poet's previous collections: La rosa en su jaula; Los frutos de Taormina; Aspersores; and Dolor de la resurrección.

The book is designed and illustrated by Elizabeth Valero and Frank David Valdés, with collage and handpainted elements, all housed in a decorated paper box. The text is photocopied onto white paper.

This is one of the few Ediciones Vigía books designed by two artists. Valdés, one of the regular Vigía designers of recent years, frequently combines organic forms into a single image. In this case, the cover of the box is decorated with an anthropomorphic figure that one one side depicts a sort of bird-man and on the other shows an anatomical rendering of a human circulatory system. Other illustrations combine human elements with plants, another typical theme explored by Valdés.

Other design motifs in the book, including decorative flower patterns, feathers, and reproductions of postage stamps may be the work of Valero. The especially elaborate page borders combine elements of both artists.
