La palabra y su sombra [The Word and Its Shadow]

Notes: 62, [8] pages. 7 by 9-1/2 inches. An edition of 200 copies. Colección Venablos.

Brief essays on language, originally published in the 1950s in the Venezuelan newspaper El Nacional. This may be the first book publication of these essays on visual and performing arts, which were part of a decade-long series called "Letra y Solfa."

This book was published during the Special Period, the economic depression that ravaged Cuba after the fall of the Soviet Union. The text is mimeographed on poor quality white paper and papel de estraza and stapled between chipboard sheets. Rolando Estevéz, the principal artist behind Ediciones Vigía, contributed the line drawings that illustrate the text and the dust jacket. The jacket and illustrations are handcolored.

There were four issues of this book, each with a different color of paper on the jacket.
