Each Sheet of Paper Made from a Different Plant

Yerbas poderosas [Powerful Plants]

Notes: 12 leaves of handmade paper, printed letterpress. 9 by 14 inches. One of 50 copies.

Cuadernos Papiro began as a small manufacturer of paper handmade from local Cuban materials. This book celebrates that heritage with each leaf made from fibers of different plants. The text describes ten plants of importance to Afro-Cuban religion and provides details including the scientific name, associated deities, ascribed spiritual powers, medicinal properties, and traditional uses. Several leaves are also illustrated with collagraphs by José Emilio Leyva Azze, in which found objects (principally organic material in this case) are affixed to a printing plate to create a relief surface.

The cover and binding are made from locally sourced materials: the green paper covers are made from water hyacinth fibers and the book fasteners from dried stems, jute, and a wooden stick. Among the plants used to make the paper are plantain, sunflower, basil, onion, sugarcane, corn, garlic, parsley, rosemary, and tobacco.
