Loynaz (1902–1997) was a poet from an upper class military family in Havana. She achieved significant acclaim in her youth in Cuba, Spain, and other countries. She fell out of favor after the Revolution and no books of her work appeared between 1958 and 1984, when an edition of her selected poems was issued in Cuba. Estévez championed her work from the earliest days of Ediciones Vigía and continues to publisher her posthumously under the El Fortín imprint. As a measure of Loynaz's literary renaissance, she was the subject of a review essay in the New Yorker in 2017.
