Notes: This is NOT A VONNEGUT PAINTING, but it is, weirdly, signed by him on the lower right.
It's a very odd, comic painting, a Surrealist feline horror scene, reminiscent of a children's book illustration. The action is explained by a caption at the top right: "Claire's lively little invitation: Dinner served promptly at 7:30 ~ fresh fish ~." This invitation has lured a white cat to the table, where it asks, "Fresh fish?" But instead of fish, giant rats burst out of the serving dishes, mocking the cat, yelling "fresh fish" in cartoon-style text bubbles.
On the back, in an unknown hand, someone has written in pencil, "A gift from Kurt Vonnegut in 1980 or 82?" The penciled captions on the painting do not appear to be in Vonnegut's hand. Just to be sure, I consulted with an expert on Vonnegut's artwork who agreed that the painting bears no resemblance to Vonnegut's work.
The painting reportedly came out of a Minneapolis estate, about 2001. I have priced it at exactly what the previous owner paid for it.
