A Cloth "Cartonera" Binding
Suturas y des------costuras
Notes: Poems from a cartonera publisher but bound without any cardboard. This copy was issued in cloth wrappers, with sewn cover decorations. The flyleafs are newspaper and the section divider is a piece of printed cloth. An interesting adaptation of the cartonera principal of repurposing discarded materials. 57 pages.
Cartonera is a publishing movement started in Argentina about 2003. Small press publishers, mostly featuring poetry, print inexpensive chapbooks and bind them with repurposed cardboard with hand-decorated covers. Frequently the covers are made by different people and seldom have a uniform design. Most books are unique. While cartonera books are distinctly Latin American, they share some of the publishing ethos of the mimeograph revolution in the United States.
Edition + Condition: A near fine copy.
Publication: Guadalajara ("Guanatos"), Mexico: Ediciones El Viaje and La Rueda Cartonera, 2012.
