Eight Men Out: The Black Sox and the 1919 World Series

Notes: A paperback edition of the best account of the Chicago Black Sox scandal and fix of the 1919 World Series. This is a classic baseball book, here reissued with a new introduction by Stephen Jay Gould, who was almost as well known for his love of the game as for his science writings.

302 pages plus eight pages of black-and-white illustrations.

Edition + Condition: A tremendous copy, signed for Stephen Jay Gould during the making of the 1988 John Sayles film starring John Cusack. This book is inscribed, often at length by 21 participants in the movie:

* Studs Terkel, the noted journalist, played a small role in the film and has written a full-page inscription to Gould on the half-title, refering to his role
* Eliot Asinof, the writer, references the bit part he played;
* Among the crew who signed are the editor, the director of photography, two producers, the costume designer and several others.

The cast signed the book in the illustration section alongside or over the photograph of the real-life character they played.
* Cusack writes, "Dr. Gould, good luck to you. I hope your (sic) please with the film. John Cusack. "Buck"
* D. B. Sweeney, who played Shoeless Joe Jackson, writes, "To Dr. Gould, hope the movie pleases real fans like you. D. B. Sweeney."
* John Mahoney writes, "To D. Gould—I'm very proud to be a part of this project and wish I could have met you. Your introduction is great. Sincerely, John Mahoney."
* David Strathairn writes, "Dr. Stephen J., have many thanks for all your natural 'histrionics' and more for introducing these eccentrics in their touching memories. Blessings to your scribblings. David Strathairn."
* John Sayles, John Anderson, and Richard Edson have simply signed over their characters' pictures.
* Five other actors also inscribed this book to Gould over the picture of their character.

A remarkable film association copy. Overall, very good or better in wrappers.

Publication: New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1987.
