Notes: Gertrude Atherton's first novel. a Gothic romance set in Wales.
"A husband kills his faithless wife and her lover. Sixty years afterward Harold Dartmouth and Weir Penrhyn, descendants of the guilty lovers, meet, fall in love, are haunted by weird memories" of their ancestor's lives, "become satisfied that they are the same souls reincarnated, discover by means of old letters and other evidences the history of the crime for which they had perished" and then go insane and self destruct—Chicago Tribune, 10 November 1888.
In later years, Atherton expressed considerable dislike for this supernatural tale.
