Bradbury's Most Elaborate Limited Edition
Christus Apollo: Cantata celebrating the eighth day of Creation and the promise of the ninth
Notes: Leonard Goldstein, of the Gold Stein Press, published many miniature books, but this small volume (5 by 6-1/2 by 3 inches thick), a collaboration with the book artist Joseph D'Ambrosio, is one of his most interesting works.
The text is the lyrics and spoken-word component of a classical music piece by Jerry Goldstein commissioned by the California Chamber Symphony in 1969. This version pairs Bradbury's text, inspired by the moon landing, with mixed-media collages by D'Ambrosio. The leaves of this book are three-dimensional frames with raised edges and recessed backs for the text. This allows D'Ambrosio's assemblages to extend above and beyond the text, and in one spread to "pop-up".
8 leaves plus covers laid into a folding clamshell box. One of 50 copies plus 7 proofs, signed by D'Ambrosio and Bradbury.
Edition + Condition: A near fine copy with minor spots of wear.
Publication: Newport Beach, CA: The Gold Stein Press, 1998.
