Item No: #307759 Typed Letter, Signed, to Lady Wavertree (Sophie Florence Lothrop Sheridan Walker). Laurence Olivier.

A Great Actor Writes about a Great Dramatist

Typed Letter, Signed, to Lady Wavertree (Sophie Florence Lothrop Sheridan Walker)

Notes: A friendly letter, following up on a request from Lady Wavertree (1873–1952) for information about one of her direct ancestors, the dramatist Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Olivier also refers to "many happy memories of our visit with you in New Zealand."

The letter is typed on blue letterhead with just the actor's name at the top. He has typed his address, 17 West 54th Street in New York, at the top of the page. The letter is signed L. Olivier.

A nice letter from the great actor to a friend about a playwright. Baron Olivier won four Academy Awards, including an Oscar for playing Hamlet (1948). He is considered one of the best interpreters of Shakespeare of the 20th century. Lady Wavretree was a British heiress who acted in her youth. After her first husband died, she married a New Zealand tennis player and member of parliament and relocated to the island where she was devoted to the arts and charitable causes.

Edition + Condition: There is a small hole next to Olivier's printed name on the letterhead, 7-1/8 by 9-9/16 inches, and a small chip from the top margin, else near fine, folded for mailing.

Publication: New York: March 17, 1952.
