Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, with matching dates on the title and copyright pages). A very good copy in the publisher's green cloth binding. Inscribed by the author, "C. H. Borstell, Esq., with the affectionate regard of N. S. Shaler." Books signed by Shaler are uncommon. This copy formerly belonged to the Harvard paleontologist and leading evolutionary theorist Stephen Jay Gould, with a bookplate denoting the provenance on the front free endpaper.
