A mimeographed typescript printed on low-quality recycled paper. A substantial early book from the press, a critical consideration of St. John of the Cross by a noted Cuban poet. The book is stapled into plain stiff paper covers and then wrapped in a handpainted dust jacket embellished with a paper title label and cross made of twigs tied with twine . Rolando Estévez designed the book and the collage illustrations on the title page and the colophon.
This is a good example of Ediciones Vigía's early editorial independence, which allowed it to pursue literary-religious criticism without seeking resources (such as paper) from government sources. One cannot help but consider this substantial book to be a statement of hope and faith in books as it was undertaken at the start of the Cuban economic collapse during the Special Period.
