A Classic Photobook
In the American West
Notes: Avedon traveled the American West for five years under a commission from the Amon Carter Museum. Against a stark white background, he photographed people living in rural areas and fresh from hard, industrial work. The result is a powerful portrait of the unromantic West—slaughterhouse workers, hardscrabble farmers, migrant farmworkers, coal miners, and even prisoners.
With an essay by Laura Wilson at the back of the book.
Not paginated, but approximately 180 pages plus one fold-out image. 11-1/4 by 14-1/4 inches. This is the hardcover issue; the book was issued simultaneously in paperback with a different cover design.
