Chicano Arts Collective Comic

Tales from the Barrio

Notes: A significant and uncommon comic book about Chicano history written and illustrated by members of the Los Angeles street art collective Los Four.

The Los Four members who participated in this publication were Frank Romero, who did the cover illustration, Carlos Almaraz who drew the piece entitled "U.S. History: Puro pedo", and Judithe Hernandez who drew "In Her House." The Chicano muralist Leo Limón drew two other stories. The writers Olivia Sánchez, Juan Geyer, and Ricardo Navarette wrote texts that address Chicano pride, Chicano history, and discrimination.

The work of Los Four came to mainstream attention in 1974 following the group exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The comic was partially funded by the United Steel Workers and the Liberty Hill Foundation (which is often cited as the publisher). I have catalogued this as a Chismearte publication because there is a notice inside the magazine about ordering copies from Chismearte, an underground Chicano art publication active in Los Angeles in the mid 1970s. The date is from the copyright notice in the story "Saturday Night Bust."

24 pages. 7-1/2 by 10 inches.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing). A fine copy (comics grade VF/NM) with minute wear at the spine.

Publication: Los Angeles: Chismearte, [1977?].
