Inscribed by the Beloved African American Poet
Our Dead Behind Us: Poems
Notes: "In these poems Lorde reveals a new maturity through language denser and richer than she has used previously. The anger she expresses comes from an awareness of suffering—both current . . . and past . . . —but is balanced by a tenderness born of love." — Library Journal.
75 pages. Issued simultaneously in this hardcover and the more common paperback.
Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, with a numberline ending in 1), hardcover issue. The book is fine but the front free endpaper was inserted slightly too far from the gutter (a minor binding flaw). In a fine dust jacket. This copy was inscribed a few months before Lorde's death from lung cancer, in November 1992. "For Lee Olive—A Sister Survivor! Courage & Faith. Audre Lorde. St. Croix 1/9/92."
The recipient may have been Olive "Lee" Gabriel (1938–2018) of St. Croix.
Publication: New York: W. W. Norton, 1986.
