Notes: One of 230 copies of the first installment in the Dark Horse Comics graphic novel (manga) edition of Lone Wolf and Cub, the only hardcover issue of the 28-volume set. These signed volumes were not offered for sale; they were given to retailers as a thank-you gift for supporting the series and to various other people connected to the series in the US.
Lone Wolf and Cub, which debuted in Japan in the 1970s, became an international sensation, selling more than 10 million books around the world. The series follows an outcast samurai and his young son as they seek vengeance in Edo-period Japan. The story-telling style, particularly the spare text and expressive imagery, influenced a generation of American comic book artists, particularly Frank Miller.
This hardcover issue of Assassin's Road was bound from the sheets of the fourth printing of the regular paperback issue. The covers are red leatherette, stamped with the series logo in gilt. Koike (1936–2019) traveled to the US only a few times and did not sign many books.
