Murakami Signed Chandler Translation

[The Long Goodbye in Japanese] Rongu guddobai [Signed Issue]

Notes: A signed copy of the great Japanese novelist's translation of a highspot in American detective fiction. "Three of the favorite novels of [Murakami's] teenage years were Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, Chandler's Long Goodbye, and Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby, all of which he eventually translated into Japanese, despite the previous existence of widely accepted versions by other translators" (quoted in Murakami Haruki the Translator by Masaki Mori in Southeast Review of Asian Studies, vol. 36).

In addition to being a prolific novelist, Murakami has done extensive translation work, including American writers like Raymond Carver, Ursula LeGuin, Truman Capote, Tim O'Brien, and others. Translation, with running, is one of Murakami's main avocations, something he does for fun.

This is one of a small number of signed copies offered through bookstores to promote the new translation.
