Annual Report of the Chief of Engineers, United States Army, to the Secretary of War, for the Year 1881. In Three Parts. Part III.

Notes: A volume from the library of Romualdo Pacheco, the first Latinx governor of California. Pacheco (1831–1899) was born in Santa Barbara, California, when the town was part of Mexico. He was a leading political figure in his day, serving in many elected state offices and as a diplomat in Central America.

In addition to serving as California's governor, he was also the first Latino in Congress (the Territory of New Mexico sent several nuevomexicanos to Congress as non-voting members). This volume comes from his time in the House of Representatives (1877–1883). This volume is stamped "R. Pacheco." in gilt at the base of the spine. Books from the libraries of 19th century Latinos are quite scarce.
