Portraits of Maugham by Penn

Seven Photographs for a Feature on W. Somerset Maugham for Show Magazine

Penn, Irving

Notes: A group of seven small gelatin silver prints (4 by 5 inches), including six portraits of Maugham and one still-life, taken by Penn. Each image is stamped on the verso (back) "Photograph by Irving Penn" with the address stamp of Penn's agent, Peter Schub.

Most likely, these are images made for Show magazine in the Spring of 1962, when Penn traveled to France to photograph the great British novelist best known for Of Human Bondage. (See Irving Penn: Centennial (2017), p. 341).

Two of the images appear to be from the same negative, but printed slightly differently. In addition to the six portraits is a posed still life of pen, paper, and cloth.

Edition + Condition: A nice group of images. All fine prints. Three are marked "rough print" on the back; all seven have handwritten ID numbers.

Publication: New York: 1962.
