Uncommon Map of New Orleans

Hardee's New Map of New Orleans Including Business Directory, Street Railway Guide, and Other Valuable Information. 1878

Notes: A brief guide to New Orleans illustrated with a large folding map of the city and a small folding plate of jetty designed by James Buchanan Eads at the mouth of the Mississippi River. The guide lists government offices, fire department leaders and the location of call boxes, railroads operating in the city, commission merchants, and attorneys at law. The final page of the guide praises the White (Man's) League uprising in 1874, where thousands of former Confederate soldiers defeated the state militia and Metropolitan Police in the Battle of Liberty Place. The uprising eventually toppled the Reconstruction Republican government and inaugurated an overtly racist government in Louisiana. This final page also makes an appeal to the second amendment, describing a government attempt to interdict a weapons shipment to the White League as an effort "to deprive the people of that inalienable right to bear arms for their own protection and defense."

The large map is Hardee's Topographical and Drainage Map of New Orleans and Surroundings from Recent Surveys and Investigations, 1878. The printed map measures 22 by 21-3/4 inches on a larger sheet. The map is lithographed in black with rail lines overprinted in red. Water is handcolored blue and parks are painted green. With a street directory in the upper right corner.

The front wrapper of the guide states that the edition was 5000 copies, which seems unlikely. OCLC locates five copies (no. 6473171, none outside of the South). In fact, there are as many holdings for the map alone as for the guide and map.

Edition + Condition: Very good in original cloth covers. The hinges, front and back, are broken. The map has minor loss at a few folds, but is otherwise bright.

Publication: New Orleans: L. Graham Print, 1878.
