Notes: The author's memoir of growing up in Harlem and coming into her own in her 20s in the 1950s. The narrative doubles as a philosophical meditation race and sexual orientation and it has become an enduring feminist classic.

The book was first published in 1982 by a small press; this is the first printing of the edition that is still in print today.

Edition + Condition: First Crossing Press edition. A near fine copy in wrappers (paperback) with a bit of soiling on the top edge of the page block and offsetting to the inside front cover from a newspaper obituary laid in. This copy is inscribed to the book collector Oliver St. Clair Franklin, OBE, "For Oliver, Enjoy! In the hand of Afrekete. Audre Lorde." Books signed by Lourde are scarce. Afrekete ("Kitty") is a character in the book, and Lorde's one-time lover.
