The Letters of Heaven

Notes: A separate printing of a short story about a boy who discovers 17th century love letters between two saints in his father's desk. He becomes fascinated with them and to keep his father from learning his discovery, he copies them out by hand.

This edition was published by the University of Oregon's fine press. Printed letterpress on Heine paper using Bembo types. The five illustrations (5-1/4 by 3-1/2 inches) are tipped-in engravings, handcolored by the artist. The edition was 125 numbers and 10 lettered copies, signed by the author and artist.

The book is bound in stiff paper covers with a paper label, with a thin leather strap to close the book.

The late Barry Lopez was an acclaimed nature writer. Robin Eschner is a California artist.

Edition + Condition: First edition. A fine copy. This copy is laid into a fine dark blue-green cloth-covered clamshell box with a paper label. The box may have been optional. The copy at Yale is described as "in case as issued," but most other copies do not seem to have cases. This copy also includes a printed diagram mounted on cardstock providing directions for tying the strap as it was originally done.

This is copy 73 signed by Lopez and Eschner. It is additionally signed by the printer, Sandy Tilcock.
