The Origin of Birds

Notes: An influential work on the evolution of birds based on close examination of the fossil record. Some of Heilmann's conclusions have now been refuted, but based largely on new fossils unavailable to him at the time he wrote The Origin of Birds. The book is an expanded version of an earlier book written in Heilmann's native Danish.

"With two plates in colour and one hundred and forty photographs and text figures from drawings by the author." vii, 210 pages plus two pages of publisher's ads.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, with the Roman numeral I on the last text page; Appleton indicated the current printing on the last page). A very good copy in original blue cloth; lacking the scarce dust jacket. Spine and cloth somewhat darkened. This copy has a distinguished provenance, with the ownership signature of the Harvard paleontologist Percy E. Raymond (1879–1952). The book was later in the library of another Harvard paleontologist, Stephen Jay Gould, one of the leading evolutionary theorists of his time. With a bookplate denoting the Gould provenance laid in.

Publication: New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1927.
