With a Delightful Full-page Watercolor

Small Beer [Signed, Numbered, with a Painting]

Notes: A collection of ten prose pieces, collected from their first appearances in magazines like The New Yorker, presented in a limited edition of 175 copies illustrated with a full-page original watercolor sketch by the author-illustrator who is best known today for the Madeleine children's books.

These stories, wry observations from Bemelman's extensive travels, appear to be lightly fictionalized to protect the guilty. "The seemingly artless text, and the equally artless drawings, at first glance mere scribbles, are both in reality polished to perfection, and accompany each other so intimately that one is scarcely conscious of passing from one to the other"—Atlanta Journal, October 1, 1939.

186 pages, illustrated throughout with reproductions of line drawings.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing). An exceptional copy bound in orange cloth, somewhat faded at the spine, else near fine, in a very good example of the fragile slipcase, which frequently splits at the edges. This one has minor wear to the corners. Both slipcase and book are numbered copy 3 (of 175). The original watercolor seems to be titled "Salmon, Pruniers, Paris." The image is of a fishmonger filleting a salmon with a scale in the background. I suspect this is a reference to the acclaimed seafood restaurant Prunier, which opened in Paris in 1924.

Publication: New York: Viking Press, 1939.
