Item No: #5130 Tropical Town and Other Poems. Salomon de la Selva.

Early English-language poetry by a Latino writer

Tropical Town and Other Poems

Notes: Until recently, Tropical Town "represent[ed] the first English-language collection of poetry by a Hispanic writer in the United States—a fact unknown to most scholars and students of Hispanic-American literature," according to Silvio Sirias, the editor of the Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage series edition from Arte Público Press. Last year it came to light that George Godoy, born to Mexican parents in Chicago, self-published a couple of chapbooks a few years before Tropical Town appeared.

132 pages. An uncommon book, published in the US by a British publisher at the end of the First World War.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing). Spine dulled, corner bumped, thus very good in the publisher's blue cloth. Lacking the scarce dust jacket.

Publication: New York: John Lane Company, 1918.
