Uncommon First American Edition in Jacket

Three of Them

Notes: The first edition of Gorky's 1901 novel of the Russian slums published in the United States, here using British sheets with the UK title page cancelled (removed) and a US title page tipped in. Translated by A Linden. Gorky was a pioneer of Russian realist prose, and one of the most well-known Russian writers in the West during the early decades of the 20th century.

Edition + Condition: First US edition, dated MCMXXII on the title page; the verso (back) of the title page is blank. A solid very good or better copy in a good jacket missing a one-inch triangle from the rear panel and a small piece from the spine. There are two small ill-advised tissue repairs on the back of the jacket.

The jacket text refers to "this new edition", but I have not been able to locate any evidence of a previous US edition (no newspaper reviews of the novel show up before 1922 and no earlier US edition is recorded in the Worldcat library database).

Publication: New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1922.
