Notes: After two decades as a writer, this was Burke's last book before he hit it big with the Dave Robicheaux series.

This is a set assembled by a collector, consisting of a first edition of the book in the first issue dust jacket with a matte finish accompanied by an uncorrected proof and housed in a custom clamshell box.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing, with a numberline ending in 1). A fine copy in a very good to near fine dust jacket, with a short tear at one fold and surface scuffing at the spine (this was a problem right from the start, which is why the paper was changed for the second printing jackets). Signed by Burke on the title page. The proof is near fine and is also signed. The clamshell box has faded at the spine but is otherwise near fine. Twenty years ago, the Author Price Guide for the proof estimated its value at $1,750. Those were the days!
