Modern Full Leather
Fairy Tales
Publication: London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1924]. First Edition.
Notes: A charming edition of Andersen's fairy tales, with dreamy color and black-and-white illustrations by Kay Nielsen. Illustrated with 12 color plates on inserted sheets, seventeen (I think I counted them all) full-page black-and-white illustrations in the style of engravings, and numerous ornaments throughout the text.
Nielsen (1886–1957) was born in Denmark. He is best known for his work, like this, done in England and then in the United States. He worked for the Walt Disney Company on the animated films Fantasia, The Little Mermaid, and Sleeping Beauty.
197 pages plus 12 inserted leaves with printed tissue guards.
Edition + Condition: A near fine copy rebound in full red morocco with gilt decoration on the spine. Old gift inscription at the front of the book, one tissue guard with a short tear. A pretty presentation of a classic Nielsen book.
