The Music from Behind the Moon: An Epitome

Publication: New York: The John Day Company, 1926. First Edition.

Notes: Part of the Witch-Woman sequence in the long mystical fantasy series, the Biography of the Life of Manuel. Music from Behind the Moon was the first book published by the John Day Company.

Illustrated with eight wood engravings by Leon Underwood. [viii], 52, [2] pages. An edition of 3000 copies. 7-1/2 by 11 inches, in a paper-covered slipcase.

Edition + Condition: First (and only) edition. A near fine copy with James Strand's bookplate on the front pastedown. One-page prospectus laid in. In a good example of the slipcase, with wear and splits to the corners and a half-inch piece missing from the top edge.

Provenance: This copy was in the private library of the Lovecraft collector James Strand, with his posthumous estate bookplate. The book was stolen from Strand after his death and was recovered by the FBI from a storage unit in Oregon City. It was returned to the family and includes the evidence tag (which incorrectly cites this as the issue with the extra suite of engravings).
