Notes: The third book of Otero's trilogy of memoirs. Otero, the second generation of a New Mexican political family, was one of the most prominent Hispanics of the first half of the twentieth century.

Otero was the highest ranking Hispanic political leader in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These are his political memoirs.

Otero was the second of several generations of his family who were successful in business and active in politics. He was also one of a small number of Hispanic New Mexicans educated outside of the Southwest in the 19th century. Otero attended St. Louis University and the University of Notre Dame. He was a well-known Republican and McKinley appointed him governor of the Territory of New Mexico in 1897; Theodore Roosevelt appointed him for a second term.

Adams, Six-Guns and Saddle Leather, 1660. Foreword by Marion Dargan. x, 404, [2:blank] pages. This trade issue was not illustrated (the deluxe issue had inserted plates). With an appendix reprinting letters, speeches, and messages, followed by an index.

Edition + Condition: First edition, first printing (trade issue). A very good to near fine copy in red cloth stamped in black. In a very good, price-clipped dust jacket with a yellow front panel and purple lettering. There is a small chip missing from the top edge and short tears along the bottom edge.

This copy is inscribed by Otero, "For Captain Rene Maurice Pincetl. Phoenix, Arizona. Dear Captain: I hope you may enjoy reading this little book. Sincerely yours, Miguel A. Otero. Santa Fe, N.M. September 25th, 1940." The recipient had served in the army during the First World War; he had just been called up by the Arizona National Guard when this book was inscribed. During the Second World War he worked stateside in Army intelligence.
