UFW Strike Portfolio
La Huelga de la Uva en Delano / The Strike of the Grape in Delano: A Portfolio of Prints from the Huelga
Publication: Delano: (the author), 1967. First edition.
Notes: A portfolio with a dozen halftone photographs from the United Farm Workers strike, each paired with an inspirational text.
Lewis spent a year on the strike lines and worked as a staff photographer for "El Malcriado," the official newspaper of the United Farm Workers. This portfolio, which concludes with a portrait of Cesar Chavez, was published to help finance a projected film about the strike.
The edition size is noted on the cover as 250 numbered copies. However, I have never seen a numbered copy, although I have handled a number of unnumbered examples over the years.
The twelve 9 by 11-inch offset printed (by Double-H Press, in San Francisco) are laid into a folding printed paper folder.
SOURCE: Hard to say. Jon Lewis unloaded a bunch of these on the market twenty or maybe twenty-five years ago. A few came my way, always unnumbered (I've never seen a numbered copy) and I never got around to doing anything with it, until now. No business consultant would recommend holding inventory that long, but I think this is a cool piece, and I'll be sorry when it's gone. I don't think I have another one.
Edition + Condition: A fine example. Not numbered.
