Collins was later appointed the U.S. poet laureate and wrote some of the best-selling collections of poems in the 21st century. His work is immediately accessible and often funny, an effect that seems simple but as any writer will tell you, very hard to pull off. This collection was selected by Edward Hirsch for the National Poetry Series.

Susan Sheehan was a New Yorker staff writer who won the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction in 1983 for a book about a patient in a mental institution. Neil won for A Bright and Shining Lie; he also obtained the Pentagon Papers for the New York Times.
