Inscribed to an Actor in the Film Version

September September

Publication: New York: Random House, 1977. First Edition.

Notes: A novel set in 1957 during civil rights protests in Memphis, Tennessee, in which a trio of white ne-'er-do-wells—a gambler, a criminal, and a girlfriend—kidnap the young son of black entrepreneur.

The book was filmed as Memphis, a made-for-TV movie co-written by Larry McMurtry and Cybill Shepherd, who starred in The Last Picture Show, a film based on one of McMurtry's novels. Shepherd starred in the film alongside J. E. Freeman and John Laughlin.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing stating First Edition with a numberline ending in 2, which was the publisher's way of identifying first printings at the time). A near fine copy in a very good or better jacket with a one-inch tear to the back panel. This copy is inscribed to one of the lead actors in the film version, "For J. E. Freeman, who plays Padjo, and plays him well, From Shelby Foote. Memphis 15 Nov 90."

Clearly, this book was inscribed during the filming, about 18 months before the movie aired (Foote inscribed a copy of Shepherd two days later). A very nice association copy.
