Asimov's Annotated Gilbert and Sullivan

Publication: Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1988. First Edition.

Notes: An inscribed copy of this massive anthology of Gilbert and Sullivan lyrics with Asimov's commentary.

At 1056 pages, this is one of the more unexpected volumes in Asimov's 500-book oeuvre. "There was one more annotation I was dying to do, and I found my chance in the later 1980s, when I was more than ever Doubleday's fair-haired boy...I seized two months of time that I thought I could get away with and worked furiously until I was finished"—I. Asimov. Asimov is referring to his reboot of the Foundation series, which landed on the bestseller list. Doubleday must have really liked him to agree to put out a book with a $50 retail price, which would still cause sticker shock today, let along 35+ years ago.

Edition + Condition: First edition (stated). A near fine copy in a dust jacket with small nicks at the edges and some soiling to the back panel; thus very good. The jacket paper is soft and uncoated, so it wears easily. An above average copy, inscribed on the title page, "To David J. Williams III, best wishes, Isaac Asimov. 24 Feb 89."
