One of the Exceptional 3-D Vigía Books

Everything I Kept / Todo lo que guardé

Notes: 97 pages. 11-3/4 by 6-1/2 inches. An edition of 200 copies. Colección del Estero.

A collection of poems by the Cuban-American poet and anthropologist and one of the great books designed and illustrated by Rolando Estévez. Mounted to the cover of the book is a cardboard suitcase that opens to reveal a number of small artifacts, including a Star of David, reflecting Behar's Jewish heritage, photographs of her relatives, and various organic materials collected from around Matanzas.

Behar's poems, in English with a Spanish translation on the facing page, are printed on stiff Kraft paper. A large fold-out illustration is inserted at the back of the book. The three-dimensional Ediciones Vigía books are some of the best from the press, and also some of the most fragile.

Behar met Estévez at the Havana Book Fair in 1994 and their friendship has resulted in several remarkable books. She is the co-editor of Handmade in Cuba: Rolando Estévez and the Beautiful Books of Ediciones Vigía (University of Florida Press, 2020).
