Publication: Holguín, Cuba: Cuadernos Papiro, 2019.

Notes: A book that is slow to give up its mysteries. Your humble cataloger as well as the librarian who wrote the description in OCLC have missed at least two aspects of this three-dimensional book inspired by a gatefold record album.

The cover is adorned with paper rosettes designed by the Colombian paper artist Maria Elena Hurtado Cardona. Mounted to the inside front cover are twelve poems/songs by the Cuban singer Fernando Cabreja, each printed letterpress on sheets of handmade paper, each progressively smaller than the one above it so that only one poem/song is visible at a time. A second leaf has lines from individual songs printed in strips and mounted on the inside back cover. The center leaf has a fold-out biography of Cabreja. Previously unnoticed is the fact that the fold-out leaf can be removed to reveal three photographs of the singer.

Also previously unnoticed is a string-bound chapbook of sorts hidden inside the front cover. A piece of green ribbon that appears to be a reference or continuation of the cover design will, when pulled, reveal the chapbook of five additional poem/songs.

About 12 inches square. An edition of 60 copies. The title is scratched into a leather-like piece of paper on the front cover. Cabreja is a popular Cuban guitarist and this book was published to commemorate his 60th birthday.
