The Poetic Edda

Notes: The first complete English translation of these stories which are the foundation of Old Norse mythology. These 13th century tales, written in verse, have had a profound influence on Scandinavian literature and are sources and inspiration for modern fantasy, including that of J. R. R. Tolkien, and even comic books (Thor is a main character).

This volume includes all 29 tales in the Codex Regius plus five others. Previous English translations had not included all the works of the classic Edda. This version was reprinted many times. The first printing is scarce.

xxvii, 588 pages. "Two volumes in one," as issued, as volumes XXI and XXII of the Scandinavian Classics.

Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing). A near fine hardcover copy in a jacket with a bit of loss to the top of the spine. Very scarce in jacket.
