First Book Written, Illustrated, and Made by Mayans in 500 Years

Conjuros y ebriedades: Cantos de mujeres mayas

Notes: According to the introduction by Elena Poniatowska, this is the first book written, illustrated, and assembled by Mayans in more than 500 years ("es el primer libro escrito, ilustrado y confeccionado por el pueblo Mayo en más de 500 años..."). This historic book collects a hundred or so poems in Spanish and Maya (with facing-page translations into Spanish), with two color illustrations by Mayan artists.

Conjuros is the major publication of Taller Leñateros, a Mayan book and paper collective started in Chiapas by the American-Mexican poet Ámbar Past.

This is the second edition, with the Poniatowska introduction, which is not present in the 1997/8 first edition. The sheets are printed offset from the serigraphed first edition. The binding, a sculpted face made from molded fiber, is the same as the first edition. The second edition comes in a printed cardboard box not included with the first. According to the afterword of the expanded English-Spanish version, Incantation, more than a thousand copies of the offset edition were printed.
