Pre-Franco Basque Cookbook
Platos escogidos de la cocina vasca
Notes: A very scarce Basque cookbook, published shortly before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.
Echagüe was a native of Bilbao and the author of one of the most popular pre-war Spanish cookbooks, Enciclopedia culinaria: La cocina completa, first published in 1933 under the nomn de plume la Marquesa de Parabere. In the 1930s, interest in Spanish regional cooking took off and there was a small flurry of Basque cookbooks, all scarce now, undoubted due to the war.
While undated, many sources cite 1935 for this book and based on internal evidence, the publication appears to have been not long after Enciclopedia culinaria.
132 pages.
Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing). Respined with marbled paper, preserving most of the front and rear wrappers. With an ink stamp of the Falange Española Tradicionalista, the Francoist party in Spain on the front cover. Uncommon.
