Yardlong Photo of the Dedication of the Buddhist Temple in Salinas
[Panoramic Photograph] [Commemoration of the Completion of the Church Assembly Hall and the Entry of the Buddha]
Notes: An original panoramic photograph of the celebration marking the completion of the Salinas Buddhist Church assembly hall and the installation of the Buddha on November 27–28, 1926. The Salinas Buddhist Church was founded in 1924 by Issei and Nisei worshippers, and the construction was completed in November 1926, when this photograph was taken. The opening of the temple was preceded by an Ochigo (sometimes Chigo) parade and this picture likely includes the participants, many of whom wear ceremonial dress. The original altar shrine is visible in the center of the image.
44 by 8 inches. Gelatin silver print. Captioned in Japanese.
Edition + Condition: A very good print, with good contrast in the center section, growing lighter at the edges. The photography studio's name is embossed on the lower right corner. The right four inches of the print show some damage, including four spots in the sky, a few creases, a tiny hole in the foreground, a two-inch tear repaired on the back (verso) with Japanese tissue, and a small area of damaged emulsion.
Publication: Salinas, CA: Green Studio, 1926.
