Post-Internment on the East Coast and a New York Directory

New York Japanese American Directory / Nyuyoku benran: Tsuketari jushoroku 1948–1949-nendo

Notes: The first post-war directory and yearbook published by the Hokubei Shinposha, a Japanese language newspaper in New York City, illustrated with a halftone photo section of patriotic activities by Japanese New Yorkers during the Second World War. The photos show pictures of Japanese Americans who were resettled on the East Coast, Nisei soldiers on leave, and celebrations marking the return of the all-Japanese 442nd infantry battalion. Other photos highlight Nisei politicians, artists, and community leaders.

The rest of the book is devoted to a bilingual Who's Who, Japanese text about resettlement and post-war activities, a tourist guide to New York, information about community organizations, and the like, plus a hundred pages or so of ads for Japanese American businesses. The directory, in English, is focused on New York residents and businesses, with some entries from the surrounding states.
