Selected Poems: By Marianne Moore. With An Introduction By T. S. Eliot: New York
Notes: The book that brought Marianne Moore's work to a wide audience. This is no. 81 on Cyril Connolly's hundred key books of the Modern Movement. An expanded version won the National Book Award for 1952.
With an eight-page introduction by T. S. Eliot, who edited the book.
xvi, 126 pages.
Edition + Condition: First edition (first printing with title page listing only "Published April, 1935." A very good copy in the publisher's green cloth binding. The front flap of the jacket is price-clipped (as issued), with publisher's rubber stamp price of "$2.00" on front flap, here either mis-stamped or partially clipped again. The jacket is missing a few dime-sized chips along the top edge and bits at the extremities. A decent jacket, but then this copy is inscribed, "For Mrs. Frederic R. Sanborn from Marianne Moore with many and varied gratitudes. May 19, 1950." Rather uncommon signed.
The recipient Janet Sweet Sanborn was an attorney in New York, perhaps the author's legal counsel.
Publication: New York: The Macmillan Company, 1935.
