Inscribed to one of Willeford's Publishers
Cockfighter
Publication: New York: Crown Publishers, 1972. First hardcover edition.
Notes: A novel set in the world of cockfighting inscribed to the publisher of the author's account of the making of the film adaptation.
Cockfighter, originally published as a paperback original in 1962, was the basis of the 1974 film, Born to Kill, starring Warren Oates and Harry Dean Stanton, directed by Monte Hellman, and with a screenplay adapted by Willeford.
[8], 247, [1:blank] pages.
Edition + Condition: First hardcover edition (first printing, with no indication of later printings). A very good copy with a stain on the bottom edge of the page block (not spreading to the lower margin of the pages themselves), in a near fine dust jacket.
This copy comes from the collection of Maurice Neville, a bookseller-collector who published the limited edition "Cockfighter Journal," posthumously printing Willeford's account of the novels filming. The book is inscribed, "To Maurie, Charles Willeford." A nice association.
