AKIRA [Complete KC Deluxe Tankobon Set]

Notes: The first book editions of the influential post-apocalyptic manga set in Tokyo after a nuclear accident triggers World War III. Otomo's Akira is the series "that could be said to have properly begun the craze for manga among English-speaking audiences"—Cambridge History of the Graphic Novel. This story was also the source of the acclaimed cyberpunk anime film of the same name.

Akira, like most manga, first appeared as short episodes in magazine anthologies. In this case, its 120 chapters were published in Yangu Magajin (Young Magazine) between 1982 and 1990. As the magazines appeared, the sections were gathered into six tankobon (graphic novel) volumes published over a ten-year period. This is a complete set of the first printing of each volume.

About 2000 pages in total. Mostly black and white, with a few initial color pages in each volume. 7-1/8 by 10-1/4 inches. The page edges of each volume are dyed a different color. The books are bound in decorated wrappers in dust jackets with different designs than the wrappers. This tankobon Akira was published as installments in the KC Deluxe manga series (nos. 11, 12, 13, 14, 166, and 339).

Edition + Condition: First printings of each volume (with the publication date and the first edition statement 第1刷発行 or 第一刷発行 on the colophon). Top edges slightly spotted. Complete sets of first printings, published over an extended period of time, are uncommon.

Publication: Tokyo: Kodansha, 1984–1993.
