Matsushita (1892–1979), a Methodist, arrived in Seattle in 1919 as an employee of Matsui & Co and stayed for more than 50 years. He began teaching Japanese at the University of Washington in 1927. He was also active in the Seattle Camera Club, a leading Japanese American photography group in the 20th century.
