Japanese Report on American Gold Mining Operations

[Report on a Gold Mining Tour of Alaska and the United States] Arasuka hokubei gasshukokukin kogyo kengaku hokoku / アラスカ及北米合衆国金鉱業見学報告

Notes: An extensive report on US gold mines and mining practices, based on a site visits in Alaska, South Dakota, Colorado, and California. The author became the director and mill manager of the Taio Gold Mining Co., in 1937, a few months after this report was published (according to the 1942 "Mining and Metallurgy" directory). The Taio mine was the most productive in Japan. Whether the author was working for the Taio mine at the time he wrote this book could not be determined definitively by your cataloguer, but it seems likely.

The book is divided into three sections:

1) The main text, with descriptions of the mines visited, often accompanied by charts or diagrams printed in blue as well as reproductions of American maps (134 pages);
2) A travelog, with a day-by-day account of the the 107-day trip, illustrated with the author's photographs (57 pages);
3) Photographs taken at the mines [35 pages].

The mines covered by the report include the Juneau Gold Mine, Fairbanks Gold Mine, Homestake Gold Mine, Golden Cycle Mill, Idaho Mill, Zeibright Mill, and others.

Not in OCLC or any other bibliography I could locate. A very uncommon book, probably produced for in-house use only, despite its sophisticated printing.

Edition + Condition: First edition. A near fine hardcover copy in a very good example of the printed cardstock slipcase.

Publication: Osaka: [Taio Gold Mining Co.?], 1936 [Showa 11].
